ENVELOPE - types of envelope

Commercial envelopes

Commercial envelopes are used primarily for business and personal correspondence such as letterheads, invoices, statements, checks, writing stationery and some direct marketing mailings and are available in many sizes. The standard "No. 10" normally accompanies your basic 8 ½" x 11" letterhead, since when folded in thirds, fits nicely therein. Almost all text paper manufacturers make matching envelopes in this size.

Now, don't run out and ask for a #11 size envelope in Strathmore Writing Bright White Wove, because chances are it doesn't exist. Only the more common sizes are manufactured in writing grade papers. Of course, any envelope can be made to order from virtually any stock. (See printing and converting envelopes.) Check pricing before you plan an "envelope conversion".

Window envelopes

There was a time when window envelopes were used to send a bill or a check through the mail, and just the sight of one brought fear to the bill-payer of the household. Well, times have changed and in addition to sending bills in window envelopes, we find all sorts of enclosures popping out.

Window envelopes save on addressing

The obvious advantage to a window envelope is that a correctly folded enclosure will allow the addressee's name and address to show through, eliminating the need to print or label the face of the envelope. This feature has led to the configuration of windows in just about any size and position on the envelope to command the recipient's attention and beg to be opened.

About custom-made window envelopes

While there are many stock size window envelopes, you can manufacture a window envelope with a window to your specifications, and at the same time print it with your unique design on the front and/or back and/or any number of different stocks. (See printing and converting envelopes.) Just be sure you have your special design approved by the USPS, since certain dark or very bright colors can cause problems during mail scanning. Also keep in mind that the Postal Service recommends allowing 5/8" clear space from the bottom edge for bar code placement.

Envelopes are also available without the patch material (poly), called open window envelopes but you relinquish a bit of security while being more conscious of recycling efforts.

Booklet Envelopes

The booklet envelope is a favorite for sales literature, annual reports and a large variety of printed collateral materials. In the first place, enclosures can be easily inserted by hand or machine, since the flap is on the long dimension. This feature distinguishes the booklet envelope from the open end envelope which has the flap on the short dimension.

Square envelopes

While this may not be the favorite of the Postal Service because it does not meet their aspect ratio formula, it is, however, frequently specified by designers because it makes a very uniform, clean presentation.

With its square flap and side seam construction, there are no seams to interfere with the printing process and it therefore works well for announcements, booklets and special promotions. Be advised that stock choices in this style are very limited unless you intend on making the envelope to order. It is readily available in both 24 lb and 28 lb white wove stock.

Open-end envelopes

Also called catalog envelopes, the opening is on the shorter dimension, unlike booklet envelopes, with the flap opening on the longer dimension. Can be used for magazines and large booklets, as the gummed flap provides protection for heavier contents. This envelope cannot be processed through automatic inserting equipment and is not recommended for lasering procedures.
